What is PE and Sport Premium?
PE and Sport Premium is a government subsidy provided to state-maintained schools in England. It is intended to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils and to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
How much is PE and Sport Premium?
In 2017-18, eligible schools are due to receive a grant of £16,000 plus an additional payment of £10 per pupil in Years 1 to 6. This is based on the information from the January 2017 census.
What is our current PE and Sport Premium grant allocation?
Granby Primary School are scheduled to receive £19,890 PE and Sport Premium funding in 2017-18.
How are the school planning to spend this?
Anyone who is part of the school community will understand the limitations of our Victorian building and grounds which have severely restricted our PE and sport provision for many years. The hard, concrete playground becomes slippery and unsuitable for PE lessons for at least a third of the year meaning that the two indoor halls are in great demand, particularly during afternoon sessions.
So it was with great excitement that at the start of 2017-18 we were finally able to realise our vision of installing an all-weather outdoor sports area, complete with canopy and Astroturf playing surface. This now means that PE lessons can take place both indoors and outdoors all year round – effectively doubling the school’s PE provision by allowing every class to have a full afternoon’s PE as opposed to just half an afternoon a week. The wonderful space this has created will also allow the provision of outdoor sports clubs throughout the colder autumn, winter and spring months.
The total cost for the installation of the canopy and Astroturf came to approximately £57,000 and part of this will be financed by this year’s PE and Sport Premium funding. Whilst this is a considerable expense, we see it as an investment that will have an incredibly positive impact on the physical education and sporting experience of Granby children for many years to come.
In addition to contributing to the cost of the new all-weather sports area, some of this year’s PE and Sport Premium funding will also be used to finance the initiatives on the following action plan.
